I'm Back

I know, I've been gone for awhile... I got really busy with school. Oh, and a little thing called the AMCAS. That's right! Harper and I applied to medical school.

I still want to continue the song challenge, so here we go. I promise I'll update more often now that it's summer.

Day 2 - Your Least Favourite Song
This isn't really my least favourite. I don't have a huge problem with Johnny Cash, in all honesty. However, Sam and I have an ongoing debate about music. She plays guitar, so I'm always begging her to play Taylor Swift stuff. Sam isn't a huge Taylor Swift fan (I like to think I'm converting her) but she loves Johnny Cash. And she likes to play this song way too much because she has fun trying to sing it as fast as she can. Then making fun of me because I can't sing it very fast at all, let alone even with a decent voice. Anyway.

Then She Thinks About Her Life: Cate does a Song a Day

I decided for the next 30 days of blogging, I am going to be doing a song meme. I love music, as you know, so this is right up my alley. Plus it will give me something focused to blog about :) The rules are to post a song per day matching the description. I will still be doing regular blog posts, but just making sure I include a song in each. I'm also not promising these 30 days are going to be consecutive. I also have a life. ;)

After the break, I provided a list of all the descriptions, for reference, and in case you want to do this yourself. I suppose you could also just list the songs all at once, the one-song-a-day thing is just how I found it.

So day one: your favourite song. I have a few, but for this I am going to say "Meet Virginia" by Train. I love this song because it's fun and I love how he is able to catch Virginia's personality with all of his off-the-wall seemingly random descriptions, but mainly because of this one line: he's describing Virginia and says she "smokes a pack a day... oh wait that's me, but anyway." I love this, because it's kind-of hard to catch just casually listening to it, but it's so accurate. When you love someone and you spend tons of time with them - and it doesn't have to be romantic love - you kind-of start to harmonize. You are two separate people, but you share things and it's hard to remember who started it first. Or who really talks like that. Like Colleen and one of her friends both write their 7s with the line through the middle. She doesn't know who did it first, but one of them did, and then the other copied, and then the first person stopped, but did it again when she saw the other person doing it, and the whole cycle started again... or I was trying to remember something my coach said and wanted to say she had said "she was like... [quote]" but I remembered my coach doesn't really talk like that; she would actually say "she said" and I would say "she was like". Little things like that. You don't even notice it but soon you are so in sync that you don't know where one person stops and the other begins. Sometimes that can be unhealthy, but sometimes it's really, really good. It's nice to know you are that intermeshed with someone.

Trying So Hard Not to Get Caught Up...

This video is perfection... two of my favourite musical things ever. Taylor Swift + ukelele = LOVE. Plus a little Jason Mraz and Train thrown in just to make me love it even more! (Oh, and if you thought Taylor can't sing live: I normally agree, but she's really good in this video. I suspect she took voice lessons over the past year or two, because all her live videos for Speak Now seem to be a lot better than in the past. But this one is especially good!)

I hope she does this at the concert we are going to!

Moving on from my Taylor Swift obsession. A bunch of us are together this weekend for a conference. Harper, Kailey and I are going to do something fun. We're thinking of going to see a movie, or even just renting one. Unfortunately, Omaha has no oceans, so I can't start my surfing lessons with Kailey yet ;) We keep trying to invite this girl, Elizabeth, who is one of Emily's friends from school. She keeps saying she'll think about it but can't tell us for sure until then. I'm trying to be understanding, but it's kind-of hard to plan this way. I don't really know what's up with her. She seems really shy, but otherwise, I don't know why she would say that unless she is waiting on someone else's invitation (which would be pretty rude). She's also really rich... and her behaviour just seems pretty snobby to me. OK, Sam would tell me that sounds petty (since Sam is a princess and is by default also rich), but why can't she commit? Any ideas?

PS: This is Cate. I'm on Harper's computer.

Knock, Knock

Do you have anyone in your life who is always there for you? I have a few people like that. Two are my parents. I think I am closer to my parents than a lot of other people my age, because I spent a lot of time with them as a kid. I was seriously ill, so I kind-of had to. A lot of the time they were the only people available to hang out with. I was also homeschooled by my dad, so we are especially close. Another person in my life like that is my coach, Coach OH!. I have known her since I was probably 8 or 9. Well, I did before that, but that's when I started taking private lessons with her. You can't spend probably 20+ hours a week with a person every day for over 10 years and NOT be close. Well, you could, but you might go crazy. Coach OH! is probably the person I trust most of all in my life. She always has the best advice. Oh and she always has this secret pizza stash in her office. Do not tell anyone. We skaters are supposed to eat healthy ;)

Right now, the person I am closest to at school is my new friend Harper. Harper and I started out kind-of rocky. We both want to be doctors... actually we both want to be pediatric hematologist-oncologists. So we were always competing. We have a crazy amount of things in common like favorite artists, fashion style, and medical histories. It's the last part that made our friendship take so long to happen, I think, but also the thing that makes us closest. I mean, it's kind-of scary to meet someone who knows everything you've been through and open up to them when you haven't before. Before I met Harper, I didn't really have any friends who knew what my life was like first-hand. (Actually, I did at one point: kids from my unit, but I lost touch with most of them when I got back to my normal life.) It's kind-of nice to have someone who understands if you are feeling like crap one day with one of your weird problems and doesn't get mad at you for not wanting to hang out after class. I am on this medication that is very routine-dependent. Yesterday, I slept through my alarm and ended up taking it two hours late when I got back from class. My stomach was upset all day and I was really achy... I felt like I had the flu. At least I didn't forget entirely. When I was sailing, it was really hard to keep a routine and my side effects got really bad. Luckily, if it's a one-time deal, they usually do only last the one day. And I have my secret stash of pills to combat the side effects, but my doctor doesn't want me taking them unless I really need to.

I Can't See Russia from My House :(

So I was thinking you might want to know why I am blogging. I'm not a writer like Harper, who writes poems when she's bored. Actually, I'm not really much of a writer at all. Initially, I had a skating contract and they were paying me to blog. No, I didn't admit this because it was in the contract not to. Anyway, I was being paid to blog and wasn't too happy about it. I'm not the type of person to post my personal life online. Still, it became kind-of fun. When my contract expired/I quit skating, I decided to continue the blog because I got used to it. I kind-of enjoy it now.

Anyway... some new developments.

One More Time with Feeling

Since so many people have gotten blogs on blogger within the past two weeks... I decided to convert. I really love the way wordpress is set up, but it will be easier for people to read my blog on blogger. For now, my old blog is locked. I tried to import the posts into here, but it doesn't seem to be working. I'm still trying to figure this out, so bear with me if stuff looks weird. But at least with a fresh start, I don't feel as guilty about not going back to fix dead/moved picture links!

Fresh starts... I needed to change the title of my blog around anyway, because I've already been to Vancouver (YAY!) and I'm no longer skating either competitively or professionally. Just for fun. My main focus these days is the MCAT. Which Kat insists is named after her... hello, CAT, just add an E. ;)
